TERA PC - General Discussion: About FPS during boss fight after upgrading my GPU.
TERA PC - General Discussion#1 Laemie11/28/2016, 06:58 AM
So let me start with my old set up, im not an IT person so pardon me if i dont give enough information.

I also want to say i have already followed -all- the fps optimization guides, tweaks, 4gb patch, force cores (doubt it helps but i tried it anyways).. etc. My tweaks for particles and other lightning, textures are even lower than what other guides say just for the sake of performance. And i aware this game is very.. CPU dependent but still:

Old:
CPU: G2020
GPU: Radeon HD 5500
RAM: 6GB
Driver: Latest (i think)
Win7 64bit.

Ingame settings i used with this set up:
Everything at 1.
Except for: Aerial(max), Textures(max), PC view distance(max), lightning enrichment (1)
Effect and lurid display at 0.
I didnt use low performance dimming.
Resolution: 1280x720

So, in open world (5-10~ ppl around me) i had 30-40~ fps. In dungeon, boss fight i had 15-30~ fps but it seemed very.. stable. It was low yes, but it didnt come to the point where it hurts me eyes. I had fun with this set up.

So i got a new GPU, called GTX 650 and i put it in my case, same set up, just different GPU.
I have been using beta driver (320), latest driver (375) and another beta (302 which recommended by a fps guide, no harm trying).

Ingame settings for this set up:
Everything at 0.
Except for Textures(max), Lightning enrichment (1)
I dont use low performance dimming
Resolution: 1280x720 (was 1600x900)

In open world (5-10~ ppl around me) i have 55-80~ fps. In dungeon, i have stable 80fps with 5 ppl around me. However, this is when thing goes south.
The moment everyone starts attacking the boss, my fps stuttering like its under 10, i can feel my fps is like 1-5fps. After 1 or 2 ppl die, my fps goes up to 50-60~. When they're back up and get to the boss, the stuttering is back like i said, its like 1-5fps

This is my NVIDIA set up:

So i want to ask if this card is just bad for Tera in general, or somehow my CPU cant handle this card (I did a few research and what i got from the internet about my CPU isnt bad, most ppl say the G2020 is okay for GTX 650), and im really.. out of options, im lost and dont know what to do anymore e.e. I tried everything. Just hoping to find any other opinion/solution here before i put my old card back in..

Thanks for reading!
Hey. Sorry, I don't have any solution, I can only really tell you about my own problem, which sounds extremely similar. I had a HD 7970 (radeon) for many years, and I've played NA tera since gunner patch. I believe you and I had the exact same issue. I solved it by buying a GTX 1060. My friend has a HD7950 and complains about the exact same issue.

Our fps was great in the open world, often I could reach 100 fps idling in Velika. But on bossfights, often right at the start, and it was very specific bosses, our fps would drop to horrendous levels. I think my record is 4 fps on second boss in KC. Funny enough in KDHM(before removed) I had no fps drops, but in the NM and easy version it would drop. Same with second and third boss in FI. AINM too.

This was not a CPU problem, and it was not a UI problem, I ran FINM without UI entirely and I still had the exact same drops. It always starts at the exact same time after boss aggro as well.

I can't really tell you if that GPU is good or bad for Tera, but it's a quite old one, around the same generation as my 7970. Your CPU is very very old too, but Tera tends to run better on old intels for some reason.
GTX 650 is a few years old, and is low end. I had one myself and in regards to Tera ran worse than when I used a GT545 at the time. Wile your CPU isn't that well, since Tera is CPU bound for a lot of things, it seems people who also have low end cards, or certain AMD cards, have even worse performance. Some people that I know that had cards around the GTX960, or below, that switched to a GTX1060, even the 3GB version, saw big improvements and no longer even had to restart their clients before certain bosses every time.

Thanks for your inputs!

The thing about this GTX 650 card is, it gives me FPS stuttering while my old HD card didnt (But low fps overall). I rather have stable low fps than stuttering imo :(

But yeah, guess i'll settle with my old card if i cant find any other solutions for this new one.

Also, i think this card just hates other players in general xD I did Ghilliglade with it, i spawned toooooons! of trees on purpose, but i still had my 60fps no problem. While in 5man dungeon, with only 4 other ppl around me attacking 1 boss, the frame goes down the river. *cri angry tears*

It's not your GPU faults. More like your CPU.
And TERA runs heavily on CPU. GPU has no / little impact for overall FPS.
Which classes were you partying with? I'm fairly certain that your framerate becomes dishwashed if a brawler in your party has growing fury for an extended period around 2min+ I believe. That and I've heard something about new classes generating more lag than older but the only times I've really suffered in fps has been whilst playing a brawler or having a skilled brawler in the same party.
I notice you switch from amd video card to nvidia video card. Not sure if you try this but there is a setting in s1engine file where if you had nvidia texturing disabled and Ati texture enabled before, that might be the problem. Reversing those settings may help a bit and turning off any direct x settings.

Thanks everyone :)

I have decided to settle with my old GPU which is the Raedon HD 5500. Guess my CPU only likes scrub GPUs :P

Just did a RMhm and i had pretty stable fps (25~), i rather have that fps than having awesome fps but stuttering below 10 in fights. I'll use the new GPU when i have my hands on an I5 CPU :>
Tera's poorly optimized with UE, that's all..

Like you, im no IT person or anything, but as someone above said, ive some srs fps drop/stuttering when a brawler is in the party. Not enough to make me die or anything, but enough to cause some of my chain skills to miss.
And the reason for that is their rage bar (aka yellow bar) that after some time logged and running stuff, it somewhat bugs, and once them start to deplete, most the time due to Growing Fury buff, ur game suffer a heavy fps decrease. Same thing for Ninjas.
If you have a brawler, u can test it urself. When ur bar is depleting (like during Growing Fury), your fps gonna drop, and once you get a burst of refill to that depleting bar, you gonna notice that your fps problem gonna disappear for a moment till it start to deplete again.
The "solution" I found for this was remove the party UI when im playing with brawlers and ninjas.
My fps dont get affected at all when I do that and with that said, I think the problem is the yellow bar those classes have.
Unless youre playing a healer, remove the UI bar should'nt be a problem since your job will be just dps or tank.
Nonetheless, im not saying that is the only culprit, but certaily one of them. Anyways, hope i have helped somehow =)

I have the exact same problem. KC dungeon during boss fights just tanks my fps. The first and third boss aren't too bad I drop from 80 to 30, it's playable but on the second boss my fps drops to 1-5 fps like you. I have this same issue in SCHM on last boss specifically when he does any kind of effect but it's most noticeable when he does the sideswipes. Also with the first boss in Akasha's Trial ace dungeon only when he does the "Infernal Flame" ability my fps goes down to 10 when the rest of the dungeon is 80+. My specs are: i5 2500k @4.5GHz / 16GB DDR3 2133 / R9 390. I have tried so many things to attempt to fix it but nothing has worked. Tried different drivers, the guides from Teratoday forum and the 99% techguy's guide, mods to remove UI, messed with many settings in the config, lowest settings, reseating GPU, getting new ram, putting the game on 2 different ssd and 1 hdd, stock speeds for CPU and many more I could list. The temps are all fine when I monitored when I get low fps. The only notable thing is that when it decides to tank my fps on these bosses my GPU usage goes from 70-100% to 10-20%.

Anyone that has used more than 1 GPU with everything else staying the same would know this is false. The GPU is still utilized on Tera, just not as much as other games (nor is it utilized well). I have a GT545, GTX650, GTX 960, GTX 1070, and an R9. They all run Tera differently with everything else being the same at 1080p. The GTX 650 had a lot of stuttering; the GTX 960 Reference gets random freezes, especially when people die and the GPU has high temps (80 degrees, even with lower resolutions); the R9 had issues with some boss fights, and restarting beforehand was required. Meanwhile the 1070 has none of the issues, and I only have to restart my client due to memory problems. These cards also all had issues even with an overclocked 6600k (Skylake i5), and overclocked ram with an nvme ssd.

@Yamazuki so you you means that even we have perfect hardware for tera , we still will getting spike , lag , fps drop with no resaon , because of the game it self?

Yes. As Tera is coded to use 1 core of CPU (NOT GPU) and the game itself is poorly optimized in way of coding and engine.
So, "perfect" Tera computer should consist high performance processor like i7 without multithread or Hyperthreading enable.

All the problems are due to the game's code. It's not good at utilizing your hardware. I know people like to focus on just the cpu, but a lot of stuttering problems isn't related to the cpu, but many times it's the gpu. If it was strictly the cpu, then as the op said, all they did was change their gpu and they saw the game run worse, and likewise with I, and others, who upgraded to modern gpus and saw the freezing/stuttering go away completely without changing their cpu. If you have stuttering/freezing then upgrade your gpu, if it's a low average fps then it's mostly the cpu. Although, the freezing/suttering is possible to almost completely eliminate, the low average fps can not be fixed with current affordable hardware, as even with my overclocked i7 6700k I still can drop down below 20 fps, and that's the game's fault.
