TERA PC - General Discussion: Character Names

I know this would pass over the ears of en masse, but I'll right it. With the game being close to 8 years now, alot of character names are unavailable due to being inactive. One solution to this is allowing accented letters or even - as spacing. Even NA console, which en masse is a part of, has this feature available.

At least with accents, I know one of the reason they didn't want to allow this was because they wanted names that most US players could type, and the standard US keyboard doesn't have any functionality for accents. (You can use alt-codes if you know how to do it, but most English speakers don't know how.) In EU they do allow accents, but a lot of European keyboards do have special keys to handle accents.

For spaces, I feel this came up in the distant past and it was actually a system limitation on PC. I wonder if it's even possible to change.

Well, I was gone for over a year and there must've been a server merge because I lost half my names.

I know that inactive names can be grabbed because I've seen friends names grabbed and my own as mentioned above. One of my original buddies names has _FR after it denoting Frost Reach which hasn't been around for a LONG time. If the name you are looking for is still unavailable then someone must've logged on to keep it or someone new got it.

It would be really great if you tried to get a name, and the character that has it hasn't reached past level 20 and played in two years, you can get it. That would be nice.

You keep repeating this every time names come up. No doubt you have a pile of names all on level 1 and no doubt you're selling them as well. Maybe don't be so obvious next time.

if you had it at max level (or at least 60) that would be one thing. but just hoarding a name on a level one character on the off chance someone will come back is kinda cruddy and sucks for people who are active more often. yeah, life happens, interests change. and i'm absolutely fine with inactive character at the max level (or close to it) not losing their names in case they come back because they obviously show a level of interest in this game. but if it's just being hoarded on a level 1 character? nah. screw that.

lost a name on a character i played a lot when the servers merged to someone who's hoarding it to this day on some level 1 character. and that feels way worse than the other name i lost to someone who was clearly active and had more hours on their character with the same name.

@counterpoint with today's keyboard systems, why not just find a simple one that flips through three (letters, caps, special characters) as a ui keyboard? that's not too hard if they can have ui for everything else.

There's no reason you could not have leveled that character to level 20 or whatever in all that time. It takes about half an hour to get a toon to level 20, so surely you could have leveled that name to 20 if you had wanted it so badly. There's no reason people taking breaks from the game can't level a toon to 20 if they want the name to stay on their account.

However, after the last name clean, people went through the dictionary and grabbed up names to leave them on a level 1 toon. Many of them have left the game, so the names just sit on level 1 toons until the next name reset. It's really not fair to the honest players that don't sell names to allow so many to keep name hoarding like they are currently allowed to do. If you're not a name hoarder, there is no reason you can't level a toon to 20 seeing as the gold sellers can get their bots to level 12 in order to spam area chat in Velika.

I totally agree with you. It's not fair for people to lose out on names, because people are hoarding them on level 1 toons. If they aren't going to ban or stop the selling of names, at least make it harder for the name sellers to keep the names they've gobbled up. I've sent plenty of messages to level 1 toons, and most are never even logged back into after they are created.

Implementing a software keyboard in the game is kind of a pain in the butt (and also creates some risk of interfering with system keyboards created by the OS, such as the Windows IME), but even besides that another problem would be all the administrator/GM tools would also need to be considered (and some of those would be outside the game).

If this were only to increase the pool of available character names, I think there are better solutions. My personal recommendation would be to force characters to have both a given name and a family name (which you could change for each character). This increases the name pool exponentially and would be applied to everyone globally so everyone's in the same boat. Of course I don't think this is something they're going to change now at this point of the game, but yeah. A lot of the scarcity in TERA is because everyone wants to have a good one-word name, and that itself is the problem.

@Christin name sellers are mostly the ones hoarding names in low level characters because they sell them for real money.

Yeah, see that in game all of the time. Last time I checked Discord, there were ads for name sales all over there to. It's been a while though.

If you mean the EME Discord, just for clarity, EME allows name-selling for gold, but forbids name-selling for real money. If you're aware of anyone selling names for real money, that's considered RMT so please report it.

(Whether they should allow any name-selling at all is another debate, but that's at least the current policy.)

i remember they banned it for a while? or at least doing so on the forums, back when there WAS a trade section. did they change their policy on name selling recentlyish?

On the forum it still is not allowed, but in Discord it is allowed (for gold only).

@counterpoint

They dont type their prices on EME discord. That alone can lead you to think they are doing RMT. IF they are not doing it then why dont they show for how much they are selling.

All you can see is "pm on discord"

How convenient.

Well, that'd be bold of them. All I'd have to do would be to create a extra Discord account, proposition some people about buying names, expose they're asking for real money, and get them banned for RMT (advertising on EME's very own server). The fact that the transaction occurs via Discord PM won't shield them.

There are two pinned messages in that channel that both make this exact point, but if people are bold enough to advertise their names there anyway if that's the plan, well I sincerely hope they get banned and their names liquidated.

I remember hearing something similar, which, so was told, was why they couldn't use the original "Arcane Engineer" for gunners and "Moon Dancer" for valkyries.

@Lilienette on PC EU, you can literally copy and past special characters. So you don't even need to use alt codes, a special ui, or EU keyboards.

Yes, my understanding was also that for system reasons it needed to be a single word or at least a compound word. That said, people were asking for "lunar dancer" not "moon dancer" (as moondancer would have been obviously out lol ).
